Israeli occupation authorities issued 1,086 administrative detention orders – detention without charge or trial – against Palestinian prisoners in 2017, reported Wattan, citing a report by the Palestinian Prisoners’ Centre for Studies.
According to the report, 647 of those orders were renewal orders for prisoners already in administrative detention, ranging from 2-6 months each.
Israeli occupation authorities can extend a Palestinian prisoner’s detention without charge or trial indefinitely.
439 of the total were for new orders, whereby a Palestinian arrested by occupation forces is transferred to administrative detention.
Israel’s systematic use of administrative detention as a tool of political repression against Palestinians living under military occupation has been condemned by various local and international human rights bodies.
